Use this checklist to quickly see whether you should apply for a DAAD scholarship or not.
If you answer YES to most questions, DAAD is worth applying to.
1. Education Check
- ⬜ Do you have a Bachelor’s degree?
- ⬜ Is your Bachelor’s degree at least 3–4 years long?
- ⬜ Is your academic performance above average (not necessarily top rank)?
If NO to any of the above → DAAD may not be suitable yet.
2. Work Experience Check
- ⬜ Do you have at least 2 years of full-time work experience after graduation?
- ⬜ Is your work experience relevant to the course you want to study?
Internships usually do not count unless full-time and well-documented.
3. Country & Nationality Check
- ⬜ Are you a citizen of a developing or emerging country (as listed by DAAD)?
- ⬜ Do you currently live outside Germany or have limited recent stay in Germany?
Most DAAD programs prioritize international applicants.
4. Course & University Alignment
- ⬜ Are you applying to a DAAD-listed German Master’s/PhD program?
- ⬜ Does your academic background match the course requirements?
- ⬜ Is the course taught in English or German (and you meet the language requirement)?
5. Motivation & Career Goals Check (MOST IMPORTANT)
- ⬜ Can you clearly explain why you chose this course?
- ⬜ Do you have clear post-study goals beyond personal salary growth?
- ⬜ Does your goal involve development, social impact, policy, sustainability, education, or institutional change?
If this section is weak, DAAD rejection chances are high.
6. Documents Readiness Check
- ⬜ Updated CV (Europass format preferred)
- ⬜ Academic transcripts & degree certificates
- ⬜ Proof of work experience (letters/contracts)
- ⬜ Strong Statement of Purpose / Motivation Letter
- ⬜ Language test scores (if required)
7. Timing Check
- ⬜ Are you applying at least 8–12 months before the program start date?
- ⬜ Are you prepared to apply to multiple universities?
Late applications = lower chances.
How to Interpret Your Score
- 8–10 YES answers → Strong DAAD candidate
- 6–7 YES answers → Possible, but improve SOP & clarity
- Below 6 YES answers → DAAD may not be the right fit yet
Common Disqualifiers (Be Honest)
- ❌ No work experience
- ❌ Applying only for “free education”
- ❌ No clear post-study plan
- ❌ Applying to non–DAAD-listed courses
💡 Potenue Tip
DAAD doesn’t reject weak profiles – it rejects unclear ones.
A well-explained motivation + aligned career plan can outperform higher marks.

This checklist is for initial self-screening only.
