The Potenue Transparency Report
Westlake University Summer School is a world-class research institution in Hangzhou, China, offering two distinct paths for international students. While both are advertised as “fully funded,” they operate on a reimbursement model that requires careful planning.
1. International Undergraduate Summer Camp (Open)
This is a 2-week research and culture program specifically for students in Life Sciences and Biology.
- Dates: July 22 – August 5, 2026.
- Deadline: May 17, 2026.
- The Funding: Includes airfare reimbursement (capped), free housing, and a meal allowance.
2. Summer Research Internship (Closed)
A 4-week intensive lab experience for STEM students.
- Dates: July 13 – August 14, 2026.
- Status: This cycle is currently closed (Deadline was March 31, 2026).
- The Funding: Includes free housing and a living allowance of 1,760 RMB, but typically does not cover airfare.
The “Hidden” Charges You Need to Know
- The Airfare Reimbursement Cap: For the Summer Camp, Westlake typically reimburses economy flights up to 5,000 RMB (~$690). If your ticket from the US or Europe costs more, you pay the difference.
- Upfront Costs: You must buy your flight ticket yourself first. The reimbursement is only paid out after you arrive on campus.
- Visa Fees: You are responsible for the cost of your Chinese X2 (Student) Visa, which is approximately $140 for US citizens.
- Health Insurance: Valid international health insurance is mandatory and must be purchased independently before travel.
Eligibility & Professional Roadmap
- Who can apply: Senior undergraduates (Juniors/Seniors) or Master’s students in STEM fields (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering).
- Professional Bar: Westlake looks for future PhD candidates. Your application should highlight specific research interests and lab experience.
- Language: No IELTS/TOEFL is required if you are currently studying in an English-taught program, but fluency is mandatory.
