What Is the SXSW EDU Student Impact Challenge?

The Student Impact Challenge is designed for young people who are already working on solutions to meaningful problems in their communities.

Instead of asking students to submit only an idea, the challenge specifically looks for projects that are past the ideation stage and in active development.

Projects can address problems at a:

  • Local level
  • Regional level
  • National level
  • International level

The central requirement is that the project should make a direct impact on a social, economic or environmental problem.

Who Can Apply?

The competition is open to students who meet the following requirements:

Currently Enrolled in High School

You must currently be enrolled in high school.

At Least 13 Years Old

Applicants must be 13 years or older.

International Students Can Apply

You do not need to be a U.S. citizen.

SXSW EDU explicitly states that international applicants are eligible.

This means eligible high school students from countries such as India can apply.

Solo or Team Projects

You can apply individually or as part of a team.

Your Project Must Already Be in Development

This is one of the most important requirements.

SXSW EDU is not looking for an idea that exists only on paper.

Your proposed solution must be past the ideation stage and actively being developed.

What Kind of Projects Can Apply?

The challenge is intentionally broad.

Your project could address issues such as:

  • Education access
  • Climate change
  • Sustainability
  • Financial literacy
  • Digital inclusion
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Environmental protection
  • Community development
  • Accessibility
  • Social inequality
  • Technology for social good

The project doesn’t have to be global.

A solution addressing a problem in your own school, city or community can qualify if it demonstrates meaningful impact.

What Do Selected Finalists Receive?

Being selected as a finalist gives students an opportunity to take their project to the SXSW EDU stage.

Six Complimentary SXSW EDU Credentials

Each finalist receives six complimentary SXSW EDU 2027 credentials.

Two are intended for student presenters, while the remaining four can be used by adult chaperones and additional team members.

Live Pitch Opportunity

Finalists get to pitch their project live before:

  • Educators
  • Investors
  • Changemakers
  • Industry professionals
  • SXSW EDU attendees

This gives young founders and innovators an opportunity to put their work in front of a much broader audience.

Expert Coaching

Finalists receive coaching from innovators and social-impact business strategists selected by SXSW EDU.

The coaching is designed to help participants:

  • Refine their project
  • Strengthen their presentation
  • Improve their pitch
  • Communicate their impact more effectively

What About Semifinalists?

The challenge also selects semifinalists.

Semifinalists receive:

  • Six complimentary SXSW EDU credentials
  • Coaching from social-impact and innovation experts
  • An opportunity to showcase their project on stage to the SXSW EDU community

According to SXSW EDU, two semifinalists are selected in addition to the six competition finalists. Semifinalists must attend SXSW EDU 2027 in Austin to maintain their semifinalist status.

Is There a Cash Prize?

There is a Student Impact Award for the grand-prize winner, with first and second runners-up also recognised.

However, SXSW EDU’s current 2027 FAQ says that the specific 2027 prize package will be updated as the event gets closer.

Historically, the competition has included a cash prize, but the current official information does not yet specify the 2027 amount.

So applicants should not rely on a specific cash amount until SXSW EDU officially announces it.

Is There an Application Fee?

No.

SXSW EDU does not charge an application fee for the Student Impact Challenge.

This is important because some other SXSW competitions have paid application routes. The Student Impact Challenge is different: students can submit their application without paying an entry fee.

  • Potential for meaningful impact
  • A unique perspective from the team

The emphasis is therefore not simply on having an interesting idea.

You need to demonstrate that you are actually building something and creating impact.

Why This Opportunity Is Worth Considering

For a high school student, getting your project in front of educators, investors and changemakers at an international event can be a significant experience.

You don’t need to already have a large company.

You don’t need to be from the United States.

And you don’t need to pay an application fee.

What you do need is a project that is already moving from an idea into something real.
