Are you an early-career scientist with a groundbreaking experimental idea? The Harvard Rowland Fellowship offers unparalleled independence, providing you with the funding and facilities to lead your own research team directly after your PhD—without the need for a traditional postdoc.
Eligibility & Professions
- Academic Level: You must hold a PhD in a science or engineering discipline.
- Timing: Your PhD must have been completed between May 1, 2025, and the start of the fellowship (late 2027).
- Professions: Experimentalists in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Engineering, and related interdisciplinary fields.
- International Applicants: Yes. This program is open to global talent. Harvard provides full support for visas and international travel for finalists.
Deadlines
- Application Submission: August 1, 2026
- Letters of Recommendation: August 15, 2026

Financial Coverage (Fully Funded)
- Annual Stipend: Starting at approximately $89,999 per year.
- Research Budget: A massive operating budget starting at $225,000 annually for lab supplies and travel.
- Equipment: Separate funding is provided for capital equipment to set up your lab.
- Hidden Charges: None. There is no application fee, and Harvard covers the cost of travel for in-person interviews in Cambridge, MA.
How to Crack It
- Emphasize Independence: This isn’t a postdoc. Your proposal must show that you are ready to be a Principal Investigator (PI) and manage your own small team.
- Experimental Focus: The Rowland Institute prizes “hands-on” experimental work. Make sure your proposal outlines a clear, high-impact experiment.
- The 250-Word Hook: Your abstract is your most important tool. Clearly state what problem you are solving and why your approach is revolutionary.
