Global Diplomacy Paths: Organization of American States (OAS) Internship Program 2026

For young professionals looking to build an elite portfolio in diplomacy, international law, or public policy, the Organization of American States (OAS) Internship Program stands as a premier stepping stone. Operating out of Washington, D.C., and various national offices, this competitive program offers a direct window into multicultural governance and inter-American affairs.

The application portal is officially open for the 2026 Fall Session / Session III, providing a vital track for students and recent grads to interface with senior diplomatic officials.

Program Details & Modalities

The OAS offers flexibility in how you choose to participate, making it highly accessible depending on your current location and residency:

  • In-Person (Headquarters): Based at the historic OAS Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
    • In-Person (National Offices): Based across various country offices located within OAS Member States.
    • Fully Virtual: Designed for remote participation, allowing you to contribute directly from your current city or country of residence worldwide.

Can International People Apply?

YES. The program is explicitly open to international applicants.

  • The Remote Advantage: International students living outside the United States can apply for the Fully Virtual track or for placement in the National Office located within their home nation.
  • The In-Person Track: If you are a foreign national applying for the Washington, D.C. headquarters, the GS/OAS provides G-4 visa sponsorship for selected and approved applicants.

Academic & Language Eligibility

To survive the rigorous preliminary review by the Department of Human Resources, you must meet the following baseline requirements:

  • Academic Standing: Open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and young professionals. If you are an undergraduate, you must have completed at least your second year of studies by the time you apply.
  • GPA Benchmark: A minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 on the US scale (or its international equivalent, placing you in the top 25% of your class).
  • Language Fluency: You must be proficient in at least two of the four official languages of the Organization: English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese.

The Financial Outlook: What You Need to Know

It is important to emphasize that the OAS Internship Program is unpaid, independent of the modality you choose. The organization does not provide stipends or financial remuneration of any kind.

If you choose or are offered an in-person position, you must verify during the interview stage that you possess sufficient independent financial means to support yourself. You will be responsible for all costs regarding international flights, housing in Washington, D.C. or regional hubs, meals, and local commuting.

Non-Negotiable Health Insurance Rule: All selected interns—whether virtual or in-person—must submit formal proof of comprehensive health insurance before day one. For those headquartering in Washington, D.C., you must secure insurance at your own expense with a minimum coverage value of USD 500,000, including provisions for medical evacuation and repatriation. Additionally, all interns must provide their own laptop and stable internet connection.
