UNESCO Youth Hackathon

UNESCO Youth Hackathon 2026

The UNESCO Youth Hackathon offers an incredible global stage for young innovators, content creators, and activists to co-design solutions for Media and Information Literacy (MIL). This year, winning teams get a fully funded trip to present their concepts at the official UNESCO global conference in Greece.

Key Program Details: UNESCO Youth Hackathon

  • Which Degree People Can Apply: No specific degree or technical background is required. It is open to students, developers, youth activists, educators, and creators. Your solution can be a tech innovation (like an app or game) or a non-tech project (like a podcast, short film, or community campaign).
  • Age Criteria:
    • Minimum Age: 18 years old.
    • Maximum Age: 30 years old.
  • Can International People Apply? Yes. It is open globally, and you can build national, regional, or completely international teams.

Execution Strategy & The Catch

  • How to Apply: Form a team of 2 to 6 members, register on the official portal, and submit a written project proposal along with a short pitch video detailing your solution before the August 16 deadline.
  • How to Crack It: You do not need a fully coded, finished product. UNESCO evaluates applications based on the creativity, feasibility, and local impact of the concept. Focus heavily on how your project directly solves real-world challenges like fake news, digital safety, or AI literacy.
  • Any Catch or Hidden Charges? Registration and participation are 100% free. For the winning teams, UNESCO fully covers round-trip economy flights and local accommodation to attend the global conference in Greece. The structural catches:
    1. The Solo Ban: You are strictly forbidden from applying as an individual. If you don’t have a team of at least 2 people, your application cannot be submitted.
    2. Out-of-Pocket Visa Fees: While UNESCO handles your flight and hotel booking, navigating the Schengen visa process and paying for local embassy visa fees, passport renewals, or biometric collection must be handled entirely out-of-pocket.
    3. Incidental Expenses: The funding covers your core travel and accommodation for the conference dates, but any extra personal meals, local transit, or leisure spending outside official event hours is your own responsibility.
