The Global Health Emerging Scholars (GHES) Program, funded by the NIH Fogarty International Center and managed by a consortium of Yale, Stanford, University of Arizona and UC Berkeley, provides a 12-month mentored research-training fellowship at collaborating LMIC research sites.

- Eligible LMIC Nationalities: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Colombia, Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nigeria, Peru, Samoa, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda.

- Mentor Requirement: Yes — a primary GHES U.S. mentor AND a primary GHES LMIC mentor are required

Who Can Apply?
U.S. applicants
Predoctoral applicants
- PhD/doctoral students
- Certain health-professional students
- Must have passed qualifying examinations
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Postdoctoral applicants
- PhD or comparable doctoral degree
- MD, DVM, DDS, DrPH, PharmD, MBBS/MBChB and other qualifying professional degrees can qualify
- Generally within 5 years of terminal degree/clinical training
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
LMIC applicants
LMIC applicants can apply only at the postdoctoral level.
They must:
- Hold a qualifying doctoral/health-professional degree
- Generally be within 5 years of completing the terminal degree/clinical training
- Be a resident of one of the collaborating LMIC research sites
- Be affiliated with a GHES medical/research institution or have the required professional relationship with GHES faculty.
Yale explicitly states that master’s and undergraduate students are not currently eligible.
Every applicant needs:
1. Primary U.S. GHES mentor
A faculty member at Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley or the University of Arizona
AND
2. Primary LMIC GHES mentor
A faculty member at a GHES collaborating LMIC research site.
Applicants are expected to develop the application and research proposal with their mentors.

The project needs to fit the interests and capabilities of the selected GHES research site and mentors.
What Does the Fellowship Cover?
The official GHES information lists:
- Monthly stipend for 12 months
- Research support
- International health insurance for U.S. applicants
- Required vaccinations for U.S. applicants
- Visa and passport fees
- Overseas round-trip travel to the training site for U.S. applicants
- Travel and accommodation for the required NIH orientation.
Full-Time Commitment
This is a serious commitment.
Accepted fellows must devote 100% of their time to GHES for the 12-month fellowship and cannot hold another job during the fellowship. U.S. fellows spend 10–12 months at their LMIC training site, while LMIC fellows spend the majority of their fellowship at their LMIC site plus 1–3 months at their U.S. mentor’s institution.
All fellows must also attend a mandatory 5-day NIH orientation in Bethesda, Maryland at the beginning of the fellowship year.
