How Much Can You Get?
The scholarship amount depends on what you’re studying:
| Category | Maximum Support |
|---|---|
| Classes 9–12 | ₹15,000/year |
| Undergraduate at eligible top-ranked institutions | ₹75,000/year |
| Postgraduate | ₹1.5 lakh/year |
| MBBS | ₹2 lakh/year |
| IIT students | ₹2 lakh/year |
| IIM MBA/PGDM | ₹5 lakh/year |
| Eligible overseas studies | ₹15 lakh/year |
Important: ₹15 lakh is the maximum award for the eligible overseas category, not the standard amount for every scholar.
Who Can Apply?
The scholarship covers several different student categories, so your eligibility depends on the programme you’re pursuing.
You generally need to:
- Be an Indian citizen
- Be studying in an eligible academic programme
- Meet the required academic-performance threshold
- Meet the applicable family-income limit
- Provide valid academic, income and admission documents
For the broader scholarship categories, the reported academic requirement is 75% or equivalent, with lower thresholds for certain reserved categories.
Who Is It For?
Eligible categories include students studying in:
- Classes 9–12
- Undergraduate programs
- Postgraduate programs
- MBBS and other specified professional programs
- Eligible IIT programs
- MBA/PGDM programs at eligible IIMs
- Selected postgraduate programs overseas
The overseas category has additional eligibility conditions, including specific institution/ranking and category requirements. Don’t assume that every Indian student planning to study abroad qualifies. Previous SBI Asha overseas criteria, for example, have specifically restricted that category to SC/ST students pursuing master’s or higher studies at qualifying overseas institutions.
Family Income Limits
The scholarship is designed specifically for students from lower-income families.
- Class 9–12: Family income up to ₹3 lakh/year
- UG, PG and professional categories: Family income up to ₹6 lakh/year
Documents You May Need
Applicants should be prepared to provide documents such as:
- Previous academic marksheets
- Income certificate/proof
- Government ID
- Admission or fee documents
- Bank account/passbook details
- Category certificate, where applicable
