About the GEM Fellowship
The National GEM Consortium supports graduate education in engineering and science through partnerships between universities and major employers.
Selected fellows can receive graduate funding along with practical, paid summer work experience through participating GEM employers. GEM currently offers fellowship routes for both master’s and doctoral students.
Financial Support
Master’s Fellowship
Employer Fellows can receive:
- Full tuition and fees at a GEM Member University
- Minimum $16,000 total stipend over the master’s program
- Up to two paid summer internships with a GEM Employer Member
University/Associate Fellows can also receive full tuition and fees, with Associate Fellows receiving at least $8,000 per year in stipend support.
PhD Fellowship
Employer Fellows can receive:
- Full tuition and fees through the fifth year of the PhD program
- At least $16,000 per year in stipend support
- Paid summer internship opportunities
- Additional university funding may supplement the fellowship to the level of other funded PhD students in the department
Associate Fellows receive full tuition and fees and at least $16,000 per year for PhD study.
The exact funding arrangement can vary by fellowship designation and university.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be pursuing or planning to pursue a master’s or PhD in an eligible STEM field.
- Have at least a 2.8/4.0 cumulative GPA for the MS fellowship or 3.0/4.0 for the PhD fellowship, according to GEM’s current program information.
- Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident at the time of application.
- Apply to at least three GEM Member Universities for STEM graduate programs.
- Meet the admission and funding requirements of the participating universities.
- Agree to the applicable internship requirements if selected as an Employer Fellow.
Important for international students
This fellowship is NOT open to applicants worldwide.
The official GEM eligibility requirements specifically state that applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents at the time of application. Therefore, applicants who are only citizens of countries such as India and do not hold U.S. permanent residency are not eligible.
Is the GRE Required?
No. GEM states that the GRE is not required for the fellowship application. However, applicants may submit GRE scores if they have them, and individual graduate programs may have their own admission requirements.
Application Process
Applicants apply through GEM’s eGEM application system.
The process generally involves:
- Registering on the GEM application portal.
- Completing the fellowship application.
- Preparing a statement of purpose.
- Providing an unofficial transcript.
- Obtaining two recommendations.
- Identifying at least three GEM Member Universities.
- Applying separately to the relevant graduate programs at those universities.
Applicants should complete their graduate-school applications according to each university’s deadlines and no later than January 15, unless an earlier university deadline applies.
