Can you apply?
The Schuman Traineeship has specific eligibility requirements.
1. Age
You must be at least 18 years old when applying.
2. Nationality
The programme is primarily open to nationals of EU Member States and accession/candidate countries. A very limited number of traineeships may be offered to nationals of other countries.
For Indian applicants: Do not assume that every Schuman vacancy is open to non-EU nationals. Check the nationality conditions for the specific placement before investing time in an application.
3. Educational qualification
Applicants generally need a full university degree equivalent to European Qualifications Framework Level 6. A limited number of positions may accept eligible vocational education qualifications obtained within the EU.
4. Language proficiency
Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of one official EU language and a very good knowledge of a second language. For non-EU nationals, the Parliament specifies a very good knowledge of English, French or German, subject to the applicable qualification rules.
5. Previous experience with EU institutions
You must not have worked or undertaken another type of traineeship at an EU institution, body or agency for more than two months.
6. Criminal record and previous study visits
You must provide an eligible criminal record. You must also not have carried out a study visit at the European Parliament Secretariat during the six months before the traineeship begins.
What you get
1. Monthly financial grant
Schuman trainees receive a monthly grant. The amount is adjusted according to the location of the traineeship, so the figure is not necessarily identical across all placements.
The European Parliament’s published 2026 schedule lists €1,889 as the base monthly amount before applicable location weighting. Applicants for March 2027 should check the latest official grant schedule rather than assume that this exact figure will apply to every placement.
2. Travel reimbursement
Eligible trainees receive a flat-rate travel reimbursement of €300 at the end of their first month. This is intended to contribute towards travel expenses; it does not guarantee that the full cost of international travel will be covered.
3. Health and accident insurance
The Parliament provides sickness and accident insurance under its traineeship arrangements. Review the official insurance information to understand the coverage and any limitations.
4. Professional experience in a European institution
You can gain practical exposure to institutional work, develop professional skills and build an understanding of European policy and administration.
5. Potential additional support
Eligible trainees with recognised disabilities may qualify for an additional allowance, subject to the Parliament’s assessment and applicable rules.

Full description
Want to gain professional experience inside one of the European Union’s most important institutions? The European Parliament Schuman Traineeship March 2027 offers university graduates a five-month paid traineeship, with opportunities to work in areas such as policy, law, finance, communications, administration and IT.
Selected trainees receive a monthly grant and a travel allowance. However, this is not a fully funded programme covering every expense: visa costs are not reimbursed, and trainees must arrange and pay for their own accommodation. International applicants should also check whether their nationality is eligible for their chosen placement.
What Is the European Parliament Schuman Traineeship?
The Schuman Traineeship is a professional development programme organised by the European Parliament. It gives graduates an opportunity to understand how the European Parliament operates while gaining practical experience in a European institutional environment.
Trainees work with the relevant department or team and contribute to activities connected with the Parliament’s responsibilities. Depending on the position, this may involve research, policy analysis, communication, administrative support, financial work, legal matters or technology-related tasks.
The programme runs twice a year. The March session generally takes place from 1 March to 31 July, while the autumn session runs from October to February.
Important: Is This Traineeship Fully Funded?
No. The Schuman Traineeship should not be described as fully funded with all expenses covered.
Although it provides a monthly grant and partial travel reimbursement, applicants may still have significant personal expenses.
Before accepting a placement, consider the following:
- Visa and permit fees: The European Parliament does not cover visa-related charges.
- Airfare and travel: The €300 travel reimbursement may be lower than the cost of travelling from your home country.
- Accommodation: You are responsible for finding accommodation, signing a rental agreement and paying any required deposit.
- Living expenses: Food, local transport and other personal expenses may exceed the monthly grant.
- Taxes: Trainees are responsible for meeting their tax obligations under the applicable national laws.
The practical implication is important: you may need savings to cover initial expenses before receiving your first grant payment. The first month’s grant may also be delayed if your required financial documents are not submitted correctly and on time.
For applicants travelling from India, visa costs, international travel and the initial accommodation deposit deserve particular attention.
What Fields Can You Work In?
The European Parliament advertises positions across a range of professional areas. Depending on the available vacancies, these may include:
- Policy and international affairs: EU internal and external policies, research and institutional work.
- Law: Legal research and related administrative activities.
- Finance: Financial processes, analysis and administrative support.
- Communication: Content, media, public information and communication activities.
- IT and technology: Technology-related work and digital support.
- Administration and logistics: Organisational operations, infrastructure and administrative coordination.
- Multilingualism: Language-related activities and support.
The actual responsibilities and qualification requirements depend on the individual vacancy.
