- Funding for 3.5 years of full-time study
- Pro-rata funding for part-time study

How to apply
The application has two separate stages:
1. Apply for a Sheffield PhD
Submit your PhD study application through the University of Sheffield application portal.
Deadline: 14 December 2026
After submitting the application, you will receive an application number.
2. Submit the DLA Funding Application
Use your Sheffield application number to complete the separate AHRC DLA funding application.
Deadline: 19 February 2027, 5 PM GMT
You do not need to already be enrolled on a PhD to apply.
Applications are first assessed by the relevant School.
Selected candidates are then nominated to a Faculty panel, which will make the final selection in March 2027.
Sheffield aims to notify applicants of the final outcome by the end of March 2027.
Is It Fully Funded?
Yes. Sheffield states that the studentship includes both the maintenance stipend and payment of tuition fees, including International fees where applicable.
The stipend is intended to support living costs, so applicants should budget for expenses not separately covered by the award.
Minimum Degree Required
You must meet the University of Sheffield’s entry requirements for your chosen PhD programme.
The DLA page does not specify one universal degree requirement because requirements vary by research area and programme.
Application Fee and Other Costs
No separate AHRC DLA funding application fee is stated by Sheffield.
Applicants should still check the costs associated with their PhD application and any personal expenses not covered by the studentship.
