Who can apply

Study Requirements

  • You are enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s programme in computer science or a closely related field.
  • Your expected graduation is in 2028 or later, so you are still a student after the fellowship.
  • You will have completed two years of study by the start date. Master’s students meet this automatically.
  • You can be in Zurich for all of July and August 2027.

Language

The programme runs in English. You need good working English, which may be checked in an interview. No test certificate is listed as required.

How to apply

  • CV in English, in Europass format
  • Official transcript in English, German, French or Italian, from your university or an authorised translator
  • One-page letter of motivation in English

All files must be PDFs and must not be password protected. If your first master’s semester GPA is not available yet, use your final bachelor’s GPA. You will also pick one or two preferred research areas.

  1. Register on SiROP, the research opportunities platform ETH uses.
  2. Open the SSRF 2027 listing linked from the official how-to-apply page and click “Apply now”.
  3. Upload your CV, transcript and motivation letter, and choose your research areas.
  4. Submit before 16 December 2026 at 13:00 CET. Only complete applications are reviewed.

ETH asks applicants not to email professors directly. The department matches fellows with groups based on the research areas you select.

What Fellows Receive

  • CHF 4,000 toward housing and living expenses for the eight weeks
  • Travel costs, reimbursed against receipts at the start of the programme
  • Visa costs
  • Supervised research in an ETH computer science group

Zurich is expensive, so plan your budget early. Many fellows look for shared housing or student rooms as soon as they receive an offer.

How to Write the Motivation Letter

One page goes quickly. Open with the research area you care about and why. Mention one or two projects, courses or papers that show you can work on hard problems, and link them to the areas you choose in the form. End with what you want to learn in Zurich and how it fits your plans after graduation. Concrete details beat broad statements.
