DAAD-JSPS Fellowship

Exclusive DAAD-JSPS Fellowship 2026: Secure Your Elite Research Residency in Japan

1. Who Can Apply for DAAD-JSPS Fellowship? (Eligibility & Age)

The fellowship is split into two distinct tracks based on your career stage. There is no biological age limit, only “academic age” requirements:

  • Short-Term Program (PhD Students & Postdocs):
    • PhD Students: Must be currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Germany and expected to complete it within 2 years.
    • Postdocs: Must have obtained their PhD within the last 6 years (cut-off: April 1, 2026).
    • Citizenship: German citizens or permanent residents of Germany.
  • Standard Program (Postdoctoral Researchers):
    • Requirement: Must have obtained your PhD within 6 years of the start date.
    • Extension: Time taken for maternity/parental leave can be subtracted from the 6-year limit (4 weeks of leave = 1 month extension).

2. Deadlines & Timeline (2026 Cycle)

  • Postdoctoral (Standard): 2nd Recruitment closed April 28, 2026. Watch for the next cycle in August 2026.
  • PhD/Short-term: DAAD accepts applications for short stays (1–6 months for postdocs, 1–12 months for PhDs) on a rolling basis or in specific quarterly windows.
  • Start Date: Research stays for this cycle typically begin between January and March 2027.

3. Financial Benefits & “Hidden” Realities

This is a fully funded program, but you must manage your personal budget for “pre-departure” costs.

  • Monthly Stipend:
    • Postdocs (Standard): ¥362,000 (~€2,200) per month.
    • PhD Students: ¥200,000 (~€1,200) per month.
  • Additional Perks: Round-trip airfare, ¥200,000 settling-in allowance, and comprehensive health insurance.
  • The “Hidden” Costs:
    • Application Fee: $0. There are no charges to apply.
    • Upfront Costs: You must pay for your own certified translations of degree certificates and initial visa processing fees.
    • First-Week Cash: The settling-in allowance is paid after arrival. You will need roughly $500–$800 in personal funds to cover your first week of meals and local transport.

Potenue Roadmap: 3 Rules to Pass the JSPS Review

  1. The Host Letter: You must have a letter of invitation from a full-time professor at a Japanese university.
  2. The “Japan-Specific” Hook: Your proposal must explain why this research cannot be done in Germany. Focus on specific equipment, archives, or datasets only available in Japan.
  3. No AI in Essays: JSPS reviewers look for academic rigor and personal voice. Avoid AI-generated proposals; they prioritize the “originality and feasibility” of the researcher’s own mind.
