GovAI Winter Fellowship is a highly selective, elite 3-month institutional fellowship in London designed by the Centre for the Governance of AI to launch high-impact careers in AI safety, governance, and public policy.
Any Catch or Hidden Charges?
- Zero Application Fees: Completely free to apply.
- The Financial Package: Exceptionally well-funded. Fellows receive a flat salary of £12,000 total for the 3 months, full travel support to/from London, a dedicated office desk, and free catered lunches on weekdays.
- The “Hidden” Cost: Finding a 3-month short-term lease or flat in London is highly competitive and expensive. While your £4,000/month salary allowance easily covers living costs, you must independently source, hunt for, and pay upfront rental deposits out of pocket before you arrive.
Strict Track & Eligibility Criteria
The fellowship offers two distinct, full-time paths depending on your natural career skill set:
- 1. Research Track: Best if your background involves writing or intense data analysis. You will develop an independent policy paper, white paper, or journal article under direct expert mentorship.
- 2. Applied Track: Ideal if your skills are non-academic. You will work on hands-on non-research projects (like operations, communications, or strategy) pitched directly by top global agencies (such as the UK’s AI Security Institute or the Oxford Martin School).
- Global Eligibility: Open to all nationalities worldwide. GovAI explicitly sponsors 3-month temporary UK work visas.
- Degree & Age Limits: There are absolutely no strict degree requirements or age caps. They accept undergraduate students, recent graduates, or mid-career corporate professionals looking to pivot into emerging tech policy.
- Core Selection Filters: They rate candidates heavily on strong reasoning abilities, clear/concise writing, and exceptional judgment rather than a specific degree title.
Selection Timelines & Critical Dates
The screening process is thorough and even includes a paid testing stage:
- Application Deadline: July 12, 2026 (23:59 BST)
- Round 1 Screening: Abstract reasoning assessment (approx. 20 minutes online).
- Round 2 (Paid Work Test): If you pass Round 1, you will participate in a intensive, paid remote work test in August.
- Round 3 Interview: Final remote interviews take place in September.
- Final Decisions: Communicated in October 2026.
- In-Person Fellowship Dates: January 18 to April 9, 2027.
How to Apply
