Who Can Apply?

  • PhD candidates who have completed all coursework and exams but have not yet received their degree (ABD status), working on their dissertation
  • Recent PhD graduates (typically within 10 years of receiving the doctorate)
  • Fields: Social sciences, humanities, and related interdisciplinary fields — applicants should have a research project relevant to the fellowship’s annual theme
  • Institutional affiliation: Fellows should be affiliated with a recognized university or research institution outside the US

US citizens and US permanent residents are not eligible. The programme is intentionally designed to bring international perspectives to Princeton and to support scholars from institutions outside the US.

The 2027–28 Annual Theme

Each year, the Fung Global Fellows Program is organized around a specific interdisciplinary theme. Applicants are expected to articulate how their research connects to the current year’s theme. The 2027–28 theme will be announced on the official PIIRS website; prospective applicants should review it carefully before crafting their application.

Past themes have included topics such as migration, technology and governance, security and globalization, and the politics of inequality — areas that attract scholars across political science, sociology, history, anthropology, and related disciplines.
