Eligibility

Can you apply?

The scholarship is specifically intended for doctoral students from developing countries who want to undertake part of their PhD research in Germany.

1. Nationality and home institution

You must be a doctoral student from a developing country and enrolled full-time at a university in a developing country.

2. PhD enrolment

You must already be enrolled in a doctoral programme. This scholarship does not fund admission to a new PhD programme in Germany.

3. PhD start date

You must have commenced your PhD within the previous three years.

4. Research relevance

Your proposed research should align with the ABCD-Centre’s research priorities and demonstrate potential for practical environmental impact.

5. English proficiency

Applicants must be proficient in English and able to communicate effectively in an international research environment.

6. Home university support

Your supervisor and home institution must support your proposed research stay. The application requires a support letter from your home institution and a clear plan for the research project.

Benefits

What you get

1. €1,200 monthly living allowance

Selected scholars receive €1,200 per month to support accommodation and living expenses during the nine-month research stay.

Over nine months, this amounts to €10,800 in accommodation and living support, subject to the scholarship agreement.

2. Insurance allowance of up to €105 per month

The scholarship provides a monthly insurance allowance of up to €105.

The maximum allowance over nine months would be €945. Applicants should confirm the insurance requirements and whether the allowance covers their actual premium.

3. Travel allowance of up to €1,000

A one-time travel allowance of up to €1,000 is available to support travel expenses.

This is a maximum allowance, not a guarantee that the full cost of international travel will be reimbursed.

4. Research materials and equipment

The host institution may allocate up to €1,000 for research materials and equipment required for the project.

This support is administered through the host institution and should not be treated as additional cash paid directly to the scholar.

How to apply

Applying

Applications must be submitted by email as a single PDF file. There is no separate online application form specified in the official call.

Step 1: Develop your research proposal

Discuss your proposed research topic, timeline and expected outcomes with your PhD supervisor and home university. The project should align with the centre’s research priorities.

Step 2: Identify a preferred host institution

Choose RWTH Aachen University, TU Dresden or UNU Resource Nexus. An invitation letter from a host scientist is preferred, although the official call lists it as a preferred rather than mandatory document.

Step 3: Prepare the required documents

Compile the following documents into one PDF:

  1. 01
Personal motivation for the research stay (2–3 pages).
  2. 02
A sample of a written scientific paper.
  3. 03
    Recent CV.
  4. 04
    Preferred host university.
  5. 05
Support letter from your home institution.
  6. 06
Invitation letter from a host scientist, preferably.
  7. 07
Statement confirming your ability to work online if remote work is required.
  8. 08
Enrolment certificate and current transcript of records, dated within the previous six months.
  9. 09
    Passport copy.

Step 4: Agree on the research plan with your supervisor

Your supervisor and home university must agree on the research topic, the overall doctoral timeline, the work to be conducted in Germany, plans for future third-party-funded research and your proposed contribution to the centre’s outreach activities.

Step 5: Email your application

Send the complete PDF to:

abcd-centre@rwth-aachen.de

Use the official deadline of 31 October 2026. The call does not specify an exact closing time, so submit well before the final day.

Step 6: Await the selection decision

The ABCD-Centre’s Steering Committee evaluates applications based on academic merit, motivation and research proposal quality. Preference is given to applicants willing to spend the entire nine-month period in Germany and those interested in translating research into policy papers.

Full description

Are you pursuing a PhD and researching water security, climate adaptation or environmental sustainability? The ABCD Future Environmental Leaders Scholarships 2027 offer two doctoral students from developing countries an opportunity to spend nine months conducting research in Germany.

Organised by the Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre (ABCD-Centre), the programme supports doctoral researchers whose work can contribute to practical solutions for water management, ecosystem resilience and climate adaptation.

Selected scholars receive €1,200 per month for accommodation and living expenses, an insurance allowance of up to €105 per month, and a one-time travel allowance of up to €1,000. The host institution may also allocate up to €1,000 for research materials and equipment.

The research stay will run from 1 March to 30 November 2027 at one of three participating research institutions in Germany. This is a research mobility scholarship for students already pursuing a PhD—not a scholarship to begin a new doctoral degree.

What Is the ABCD Future Environmental Leaders Scholarship?

The Global Water and Climate Adaptation Centre brings together research and academic institutions in Aachen, Bangkok, Chennai and Dresden to address global challenges related to water security and climate adaptation.

The centre is a collaborative initiative involving RWTH Aachen University, the Asian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras, the United Nations University Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and Resources (UNU Resource Nexus), and Technische Universität Dresden.

Through the Future Environmental Leaders Scholarships, the centre supports doctoral researchers from developing countries who want to advance their research through an international research stay.

The programme is designed to help researchers strengthen their academic work, collaborate with host scientists and translate research findings into practical applications.

Is This Scholarship Fully Funded?

The scholarship provides substantial financial support, but applicants should not assume that every expense is covered.

The official call specifies monthly living support, an insurance allowance, travel assistance and possible research-material funding. However, these benefits have limits.

Before accepting an award, clarify the following:

  • Whether the travel allowance will cover your complete journey to Germany.
  • Whether the insurance allowance covers the required policy in full.
  • Whether visa and residence-permit costs are reimbursed.
  • Whether any accommodation deposit or other upfront expense must be paid personally.
  • Whether your living expenses will exceed the €1,200 monthly allowance.

The official call does not clearly confirm full reimbursement of visa costs. Applicants should contact the programme for clarification before making financial commitments.

Which Research Areas Are Prioritised?

The call welcomes research across the centre’s water security and climate adaptation themes. Priority is given to projects addressing the following topics:

  • Water infrastructure and digitalisation: Modelling water infrastructure, digital twins and habitat modelling.
  • Ecosystem resilience: Innovative monitoring and nature-based adaptation measures.
  • Climate-driven water extremes: Research on urban flooding, droughts and other water-related climate risks.
  • Sustainable water business models: Economic models for unconventional water resources.
  • Sustainable construction: Eco-friendly materials and building solutions for climate adaptation.

Your proposal should explain how the research will contribute to scientific understanding and practical solutions.
