Can you apply?
DRK is looking for organizations with a tested solution, a clear social mission and the potential to create substantial impact.
You may be a potential applicant if you are:
- A founder of an early-stage nonprofit organization.
- An entrepreneur building a mission-driven, impact-first for-profit company.
- A social entrepreneur working on a significant problem affecting underserved communities.
- A leader whose organization has tested its solution and can demonstrate early evidence of impact.
- A founder seeking to scale a solution beyond a small, local programme.
Important: This is funding for an eligible organization, not a personal grant for an individual founder. You need an operating social enterprise or nonprofit that meets DRK’s criteria.
What you get
1. Up to US$300,000 in capital
DRK provides up to US$300,000 over three years, usually through multiple funding tranches.
The capital may be structured as either:
- Unrestricted grant funding for eligible nonprofit organizations.
- Investment capital for eligible for-profit social enterprises.
The exact funding instrument and payment schedule are determined during the closing process. The maximum amount is not guaranteed to every applicant.
2. Up to US$500,000 in additional operational support
DRK reports that its capacity-building support can be worth up to US$500,000 in kind. This is not additional cash paid to the founder.
Support may include assistance with:
- Leadership and board development.
- Fundraising strategy and organizational capacity.
- Financial planning and sustainability.
- Talent strategy and team development.
- Business model refinement and scaling strategy.
3. Three years of strategic guidance
A senior DRK team member takes on a board-service role for the three-year support period, working closely with the organization and its leadership.
This hands-on model is designed to help founders navigate growth challenges, improve decision-making and build stronger organizations.
4. Access to a social-impact network
Selected organizations become part of DRK’s wider portfolio and alumni community, creating opportunities to connect with other entrepreneurs, experts and potential partners.
Applying
The application process begins online and is followed by a selective review and due-diligence process.
Step 1: Review the eligibility criteria
Visit the official DRK Foundation eligibility page and confirm that your organization fits the foundation’s funding focus.
Step 2: Prepare your organizational information
The online application takes approximately 30–60 minutes, according to DRK. You can use existing materials where appropriate.
Prepare a written executive summary, pitch deck or business plan addressing the topics requested in the official application.
Step 3: Prepare your leadership team’s CVs
DRK requests standard resumes or CVs for the entrepreneur or key leadership team members. Text-only biographies do not meet this requirement.
Step 4: Submit the online application
Complete the application through the official DRK Foundation website. The foundation does not accept applications submitted by email.
Step 5: Wait for the initial review
DRK states that the initial application stage takes an average of 8–10 weeks. Selected applicants may be invited to exploratory conversations.
Step 6: Participate in due diligence
Candidates who advance may go through additional interviews, organizational and financial reviews, reference checks and planning discussions.
The process is highly selective, and submitting an application does not guarantee funding.

Full description
Building a startup that tackles a real social or environmental problem? The Draper Richards Kaplan (DRK) Foundation supports early-stage social entrepreneurs with up to US$300,000 in funding over three years, alongside hands-on operational guidance, strategic support and access to a global community of impact-driven founders.
Unlike conventional startup grants, DRK focuses on organizations that have already tested their solutions and demonstrated early evidence of impact. It supports both nonprofit organizations and mission-driven for-profit social enterprises working to improve the lives of underserved communities.
The funding may be provided as an unrestricted grant or investment capital, depending on the organization and the final agreement. This is not a personal grant for individuals or funding for an idea that has not yet been tested.
What Is the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation?
The Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation is a venture philanthropy organization that partners with early-stage social enterprises to help them build sustainable organizations and expand their impact.
Its approach combines capital with practical guidance. Rather than simply providing money and stepping away, DRK works closely with selected organizations over a three-year period to strengthen their leadership, operations, fundraising capabilities, financial sustainability and growth strategy.
The foundation looks for entrepreneurs who understand the communities they serve and have developed innovative solutions to significant social or environmental problems.
For founders, this means the opportunity is about more than securing funding. It is also about building an organization capable of delivering measurable impact at scale.
Is This Opportunity Suitable for Indian Founders?
Yes. India is one of DRK’s priority operating regions.
Indian founders can be considered if their organizations meet the foundation’s social-impact, organizational, geographic and scalability criteria.
However, being based in India does not automatically make an organization eligible. DRK evaluates the problem being addressed, the solution’s demonstrated impact, the organization’s structure and its potential to scale.
For example, a startup improving access to education, healthcare, livelihoods or economic opportunity for underserved communities may be relevant if it has a functioning solution and evidence of impact.
A conventional commercial startup without a predominant social-impact focus would generally not fit the foundation’s funding thesis.
